The electrical insulating glass tape is used for welding of the polyethylene closure parts by fusing polyethylene tape.
The method of fusing polyethylene tape under the glass tape is versatile and can be used to restore sheaths and hoses on any cables, irrespective of the outer diameter of their sheath or the dimensions and design of the closures. This method is used for fusing both annular and longitudinal seams on polyethylene closures. A polyethylene light-stabilized black tape with approximately the same melting point as the cable sheath is used for fusing.
The polyethylene closure parts are properly sanded with a cable knife to a depth of 0.5 mm at the fusion areas. The end-face of the closure halves and cones is chamfered. The fusion should be performed through glass tape in 3-4 layers on top of polyethylene tape winding. The ends of the glass tape are secured with wire bandages. The areas covered with glass tape are evenly heated with a moderate flame, slowly moving it over the entire surface of the seam. It is important to heat the materials with periodic breaks or pauses, during which the flame is moved away. During the fusion of a longitudinal seam, only a specific section of the seam, a strip 40 to 50 mm wide approximately, should be heated. The glass tape should be left in place on the finished seam until it has cooled down, fully cured and reached a temperature of 50-60 °C. It is necessary to perform the initial fusion of the closure parts with each other before attaching the closure to the cable sheath or protective hose. The glass tape must not be reused.
